ELMA, WA: 3-Day Cow Clinic

A rare opportunity to combine horsemanship and cattle work on the west side of Washington.

This 3-day Cow Clinic in Elma is a unique chance to work with Steve Rother and cows together — something that creates a level of purpose, feel, and realism that many horses and riders are missing.

If you have been wanting to sharpen your horsemanship while giving your horse a real job, this clinic is for you.

Cattle have a way of revealing the truth. They show you where your horse is mentally, emotionally, and physically. They expose holes in softness, focus, control, confidence, and commitment — and they also give you a powerful way to improve all of those things.

Location: Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds

Throughout the clinic, Steve will cover a wide range of cattle work, including:

  • Sorting
  • Boxing
  • Tracking
  • Gathering
  • And even roping

One of the best parts of this clinic is that it is designed to follow the interests and skill levels of the riders attending. If there is a specific area you want to improve, Steve will work to make sure it is included and supported during the clinic.

This is not just a clinic for cow horse people.

It is a clinic for riders who want more purpose, more feel, and more real-world application for their horsemanship.

Whether you are newer to cattle or already have some experience, Steve will help you use the cows to improve your horse’s focus, responsiveness, confidence, and overall usefulness.

Why this clinic matters

A lot of horses and riders spend too much time doing exercises without ever giving those exercises a meaningful job. Cattle change that. They create purpose. They sharpen timing. They improve feel. And they give both horse and rider a reason to come together in a more focused way. That is where a lot of breakthroughs happen.

If you want to improve your horsemanship, build a better working relationship with your horse, and learn how to use cattle as a powerful training tool, this is a clinic you do not want to miss.

This clinic will be split into two classes* so that everyone can have extensive one-on-one time with Steve.  Participants from both Levels can watch the opposite Level at no cost.

The Level 1 Class will be primarily focused towards teaching principles of safety, communication, and confidence building for both horse and rider.  This is a great class for anyone who is new or still needing foundation exercises, lacking confidence, possibly looking to not canter too much (or wanting to try cantering more), having any major issues with their horse (bucking, rearing, etc.), or themselves.  Green horses (less than 6 months of riding) should be in this class.  We recommend this class if you have not previously done a clinic with Steve.  It will run from 9:00am – 1:30pm.

The Level 2 Class will be primarily focused towards teaching more intermediate to advanced principles.  In this class we will assume that you have basic understanding of natural horsemanship groundwork concepts and techniques and are willing to have a ‘go for it’ attitude.  This class will involve advancing your groundwork techniques, body control, and riding maneuvers.  If your horse has any behavioral issues (bucking, rearing, striking, etc.), this class is not for you.  It will run from 2:00pm – 6:30pm.

*If there are not enough registered participants to have two classes, the clinic will run from 9:30am-3:00pm, with a lunch break from 11:30am-1:00pm.  If anyone requires extra assistance or guidance, this time can be extended in the afternoon.

This clinic builds on concepts that take several days to achieve.  For best results the clinic should be attended in its entirety; however, a minimum participation of 2 days is required.  If your horse is not rideable or is too you, you can participate only within the groundwork portion.
